about

Traditional monastic hymn (c 800). Translated from Latin by John Mason Neale (1861)

lyrics

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
1. O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel,
2. O come, O Wisdom from on high, Who orders all things mightily;
3. O come, O come, great Lord of might, Who to your tribes on Sinai's height
4. O come, O Rod of Jesse's stem, From ev'ry foe deliver them
5. O come, O Key of David, come, And open wide our heav'nly home;
6. O come, O Dayspring from on high, And cheer us by your drawing nigh;
7. O come, Desire of nations, bind, In one the hearts of humankind;

1. That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear.
2. To us the path of knowledge show, And teach us in her ways to go.
3. In ancient times once gave the law, In cloud, and majesty, and awe.
4. That trust your mighty power to save, And give them vict'ry o'er the grave.
5. Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery.
6. Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death's dark shadow put to flight.
7. O bid our sad divisions cease, And be for us our Prince of Peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel.
